Temporary residence for of study
Time limit for police decision: 90 days from the receipt of the application
Students from third countries (including doctoral students) who plan to stay in Slovakia for more than 90 days apply for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of study. The residence is granted for the period of the expected period of study, maximum for a period of 6 years.

Who can obtain a temporary residence for the purpose of study?
A foreigner (national of a third country) can obtain temporary residence for the purpose of studying in the Slovak Republic if:
1. is a pupil/student of a full-time secondary school and is younger than 20 years old on the date of submitting the application for the granting of temporary residence; if it is a student of extension studies, qualification studies, specialization studies or higher professional studies under the age of 23 on the date of submission of the application for the granting of temporary residence,
2. is a university student or,
3. participates in language or professional training for study at a university that is
organized by a university in the Slovak Republic.
Frequently asked questions
Application for granting temporary residence
The application for granting temporary residence is submitted in person:
(1) abroad at the Slovak embassy/consulate territorially competent for the foreigner's home country,
(2) in Slovakia, at the relevant department of the foreign police.
The application can be accepted at the foreigner's police,
only if the national of a third country stays in Slovakia under the following conditions:
has a valid residence permit,
has been granted a tolerated stay,
is a holder of a national visa type D,
he is a national of a third country for whom a visa is not required,
this is a holder of a certificate of a Slovak living abroad.
Application submission
The application must be submitted complete with all the necessary information, otherwise it will not be accepted.
If the embassy or police department does not accept the application, it will provide the applicant with written information about which documents he must provide in order for his application to be accepted.
If the request for temporary residence is granted, the police department will send the applicant a written notification, stating the date of grant and the date of expiration . When deciding on the time for which temporary residence is to be granted, the time validity of the travel document is not taken into account.
Warning: if a national of a third country who is participating in language or professional training to study at a university cannot apply for a change of purpose of stay.

The application consists of the following documents
Printed form " Application for granting temporary residence" (must be filled in Slovak), generated online by the OCP Ordering System,
2 current photographs of the face 3 x 3.5 cm,
valid travel document (only for inspection),
a document proving the purpose of the stay - STUDY IS PROVIDED:
by confirmation of the relevant state administration body (Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic) or the school on admission to study, issued by the statutory representative of the school (e.g. director, deputy director, dean of the faculty or vice-dean),
confirmation of the organization administratively ensuring programs approved by the Slovak government or EU programs based on a contract with the relevant state administration body,
a document in Slovak showing sufficient financial security for the stay - (confirmation of the balance in a bank account held in the name of a third-country national, confirmation of the award of a scholarship, where the amount of the scholarship is stated, confirmation of the statutory body of a legal entity on the security of financial resources during the stay or an affidavit person, that he will provide the person with financial security during the stay together with confirmation of the account balance),
an extract from the criminal record, apostilled or superlegalized, from the foreigner's home country and from each country where the foreigner stayed for more than 90 days during 6 consecutive months in the last 3 years ; high school students are not required to submit extracts from the criminal record.
confirmation of securing accommodation in the territory of the Slovak Republic (except for university students),
Stamps: €4.50, for issuing a residence permit. There is no fee for submitting an application for temporary residence for the purpose of study.
The application, including all attachments, is submitted
Every document issued in a language other than Slovak must be apostilled/superlegalized (except for documents in Czech) and must be officially translated into Slovak by a Slovak translator . If the document is translated abroad, it must be confirmed by the Slovak Embassy that the translation was made by an authorized person.
None of the documents proving consent, financial security, integrity and accommodation must be older than 90 days (except e.g. birth or marriage certificate).
In the case of an application for renewal of temporary residence, it is no longer necessary to submit an extract from the criminal record. However, it is necessary to submit a certificate of health insurance in the name of a foreigner in the Slovak Republic.
How to apply for residence in the Slovak Republic
The application form can be ordered at any police department of the Foreign Police in the Slovak Republic for the following types of stays:
o grant o submit an application for the first grant of residence (business, employment, study.)
For these types of stays, you need to book an appointment at the Foreigners' Police in the Slovak Republic.

How to apply for residence abroad at the Slovak Embassy
If a foreigner cannot submit an application for a residence permit in Slovakia, he submits the application at the embassy in the country of which he is a citizen or in which he has a registered residence.
The application deadline must be booked in advance at the SR council.
If the application is submitted at the representative office of the Slovak Republic abroad, the deadline for the assessment of the application in the Slovak Republic begins to run from the delivery of the application to the foreigner's police in the Slovak Republic.
If the application is submitted at a representative office, the Representative Office will conduct a personal interview with the applicant for the purpose of preliminary assessment of the application.
RENEWAL of temporary residence for the purpose of study
1/ Students from third countries who completed university studies in Slovakia can apply for renewal of temporary residence after the end of their studies in order to look for employment or start a business in Slovakia. In this case, their stay can be extended by nine months.
2/ The student from a third country submits an application for the renewal of temporary residence in person on an official form at the police department no later than the last day of validity of the temporary residence.
3/ Temporary residence is considered valid on the territory of the Slovak Republic after its expiry until the decision on the application for renewal of temporary residence is made.
Examination of foreigners after the grant of residence
MEDICAL CHECK

A medical report confirming that the foreigner does not suffer from a disease threatening public health is submitted no later than 30 days after receiving the residence document.
At the request of a foreigner, the police can extend the deadline for submitting a medical report by 60 days.
The medical report must not be older than 30 days.
It is not presented by a foreigner:
(1) with temporary residence for the purpose of fulfilling official duties by civilian components of the armed forces,
(2) a foreigner with a temporary residence permit as a person with recognized Slovak status living abroad,
(3) a foreigner with a temporary residence permit due to the recognized status of a person with a long-term residence in another member state,
(4) a foreigner who has been granted residence in another member state,
(5) when changing the type or purpose of stay.
