What is permanent residence?

Permanent residence of a foreigner in Slovakia is a more stable type of residence that allows a foreigner to stay in the territory of the Slovak Republic for a long time and to travel abroad and back.

Foreigners with permanent residence have the same rights and obligations as Slovak citizens in most areas of life (e.g. employment, health care, social affairs, public life at the regional level).

Long-term stay

The police department will grant a foreigner:

  • ​who resides in the territory of the Slovak Republic legally and continuously for a period of 5 years immediately before submitting the application,

  • whose long-term residence was canceled or expired for reasons established by law,

  • who has 5 years of authorized, continuous residence in the territory of the member states as a holder of a blue card and stays in the territory of the Slovak Republic as a holder of a blue card for at least 2 years immediately before submitting the application.

Permanent residence for five years

Can the police department grant to a foreigner

  • who is the spouse of a citizen of the Slovak Republic with permanent residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic or a dependent relative in the direct line of a citizen of the Slovak Republic with permanent residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic,

  • who is an unmarried child under the age of 18 entrusted to the personal care of a foreigner who is the spouse of a citizen of the Slovak Republic with permanent residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic ,

  • who is an unmarried child under the age of 18 of a foreigner with a permanent residence for five years or a child under the age of 18 entrusted to the personal care of a foreigner with a permanent residence for five years,

  • who is a dependent child over the age of 18 who is unable to take care of himself due to a long-term adverse health condition, a foreigner with a permanent residence,

  • or if it is in the interest of the Slovak Republic.

Permanent residence for an unlimited time

Can the police department grant a foreigner:

  • if a foreigner has been granted permanent residence for 5 years for at least four years, he can apply for permanent residence for an unlimited time.

Filing an application for permanent residence

  • the application can be submitted at a representative office or in person at a police department in the Slovak Republic,

  • an application for the granting of permanent residence for five years can be submitted to the police department by a national of a third country who is legally staying in the territory of the Slovak Republic.


Frequently asked questions

Where to apply for permanent residence?

At the consular office abroad: the application for the granting of permanent residence is submitted by the national of a third country in person abroad at the consular office .

At a police station in Slovakia: a third-country national can submit an application for permanent residence in person at a police station .

  • if he is staying in the territory of the Slovak Republic on the basis of a valid residence permit,

  • if he is staying in the territory of the Slovak Republic on the basis of a granted tolerated permit (§ 58 para. 1 letters a) to c) or para. 2),

  • if he is staying on the territory of the Slovak Republic on the basis of a national visa (§ 15);

  • if he is staying on the territory of the Slovak Republic on the basis of a Schengen visa granted by another member state on the basis of an agreement on representation in the granting of Schengen visas between the Slovak Republic and another member state,

  • it is a third-country national for whom a visa is not required, or

  • this is a holder of a certificate of a Slovak living abroad.

Warning

In the event that the foreigner does not submit all the required documents to the application for permanent residence for five years, the embassy or the police department will not accept the application and at the same time provide the applicant with written information about which documents he must submit with the application.

  • The documents attached to the application must not be older than 90 days (except registry documents, e.g. marriage certificate), otherwise the police will not accept them.

  • Every document issued abroad must be properly authenticated (e.g. with an attached apostille clause or so-called super legalization) and translated into Slovak by an official translator.

  • The foreigner must take out health insurance within 3 working days of receiving the residence permit.

  • There is no need to verify any documents for countries that have concluded a legal assistance agreement with Slovakia.

  • Within 30 days of receiving the residence permit, the foreigner must submit to the police department a medical certificate (if he did not submit it during previous stays) confirming that he does not suffer from a disease threatening public health (not older than 30 days). Upon request, the police may extend the deadline for submitting a medical report by 60 days.

Where to apply for a residence permit at the foreign police in Slovakia

At any foreigner's police station, you can make an appointment for submitting applications for types of residence: granting temporary residence, granting permanent residence for five years, granting tolerated residence, and granting national visas.

You are not bound to the relevant department for these types of stays.

  • for renewal of temporary residence,

  • submitting an application for the granting of permanent residence for an unlimited time,

  • submitting an application for a long-term residence permit,

  • submitting a request to change the purpose or type of stay,

  • submitting a request for invitation verification,

  • for submitting a request for the production of residence documents.

  • for citizens of the European Economic Area
